Daughters of the American Revolution
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, DC, is a volunteer
women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving
American history, and securing America's future through better education for children.
Any woman is eligible for membership who is no less than eighteen years of age
and can prove lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving
American independence.
Our chapter was founded in 1916 and is named for the famous
(infamous from the viewpoint of the Cherokee) General Andrew Pickens.
In 1776, the Cherokee of Tamassee were successfully defending their land from then Captain Pickens
and his soldiers. Then suddenly, they heard: Pop! Pop! Pop! The Cherokee retreated
because additional white men seemed to have materialized from nowhere to shoot at them.
Actually, the popping noise can be attributed to a dry canebrake catching fire.
From that day forth, the Cherokee claimed that Pickens possessed wizardly powers.
It is interesting to note that the area known as Tamassee, nestled in the Cheohee Valley,
had a special significance to the Cherokee. The name Tamassee means "place of the sunlight of God."
Few arrowheads are found in the hills and glades of Tamassee because the beauty of this place
inspired the Cherokee to live peacefully here. Moreover, other tribes were welcomed to Tamassee
to trade, not to engage in war.
In addition to its rich history, Tamassee is vitally important today. The Tamassee
DAR School offers a safe and healthy haven for children from ages 13 to 18 who must
be removed from their homes due to a crisis. Our chapter supports the mission of the
Tamassee DAR School as one of our projects.
We are located in Seneca, South Carolina, and would love to
talk to you about becoming a member of the
Society. We meet on the third Tuesday of every month.
We welcome new members who may have relocated to the Seneca area.
Moreover, we extend a warm welcome to prospective members who may
need assistance gathering their documentation tracing ancestors
